Wilson, NC Attractions Outdoors, Folksy Art
Wilson established in the center of Old Downtown the massive Whirligig sculptures of a Farm machinery repairman, Vollis Simpson, who created giant sculptures made from recycled industrial parts that were designed to be a moving work of whimsical art. Soon locals in droves lined up to see the giant kinetic artistic works located on his family’s farm.
Many years later his fame grew as did the number of sculptures. However, while he advanced in age his health declined and he could no long preform the regular maintence required to keep them running well. They have to be greased often and repainted to survive the outdoor elements. Rather than let these clever whimsical sculptures decay, money was used from art grants to move the sculptures downtown, build a park to display them and pay for the proper maintenance.
Some of his sculptures are also housed in museums out of state like the one titled “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” which is in Maryland. Thanks to the caring team of conservationists, Vollis Simpson's sculptures are kept in pristine condition, and are loving displayed in the downtown park.
