Find the Best Asphalt Parking Lot Contractor
Asphalt is the material of choice for most roads and parking lots in the USA. Asphalt pavement has many benefits: it’s a durable driving surface, can flex under heavy loads without cracking, doesn't wash away like dirt or gravel, smooth, and has great traction. It is also a top choice because it is relatively affordable, especially for how many benefits it provides.
Choosing the best asphalt contractor can be stressful. What if the contractor you choose does a subpar job? How do you make sure they have the necessary qualifications? What if you are overcharged for the work? NC Paving Pros will help you feel confident in your choice:

Crack Repair
Asphalt forms cracks for several reasons including poor drainage, tree roots, heavy vehicle traffic, and poor compaction during installation. Cracks can be classified as either minor or severe. Minor crack repair is usually caused by the earth shifting, and are filled with a rubberized crack filler. Cracking that is interconnected or affects a large section may need to be cut out and patched. These kinds of cracks include: alligator cracking, slippage cracking, reflective cracking, rutting, block cracking, edge cracks and upheaval. These require full depth asphalt replacement patching which repairs the gravel subbase (foundation) at the same time.
Pothole Repair
Asphalt cracks that are not filled or patched can lead to lots of potholes forming in the pavement. When rainwater flows into the openings in the asphalt surface, it can erode the foundation, or move through the gravel subbase and settle in an area far away from the original crack. When it freezes, the trapped water expands. During freeze-thaw cycles, the expansion and compaction can cause stress on the pavement, and leave behind a void underneath the asphalt. Then when traffic drives over the area, the pavement can break and a pothole forms.
Cutting and patching potholes is a proven successful protocol to repair potholes:
We offer on-site inspections to evaluate potholes in your road, driveway, or parking lot. Over the phone estimates can be inaccurate and provide a ballpark, but for a firm price make sure your asphalt contractor sees the damage in person. This will also let us make sure an asphalt patch will be the best solution for your pavement. If there is extensive damage, or the asphalt is in bad condition, asphalt resurfacing or replacement may be more cost effective than patching many potholes.
Cutting and patching potholes is a proven successful protocol to repair potholes:
- The area around the pothole is cut away to create a rectangle with smooth sides
- Old asphalt and debris is removed
- The gravel subbase is repaired to create a new solid foundation
- A tack coat is applied around the edges of the rectangle to strengthen the bond with the hot asphalt patching material
- Hot mix asphalt is paved on top and firmly compacted, so it is level with surrounding pavement.

Asphalt Resurfacing
Resurfacing is an affordable way of refreshing a worn out pavement surface by removing the top few inches of asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt pavement. Areas that are in very poor condition - like alligator cracking and potholes, or deep cracks, must be removed and replaced, or that damage will shortly reflect back up through the overlay.
Resurfacing uses a milling machine to remove the desired depth of old asphalt pavement. Milling machines have a series of diamond tipped saw blades mounted on a rolling shaft that is set to the desired removal depth. As the machine grinds off the damaged asphalt pavement, the old asphalt pavement is pulled up, placed on a conveyor belt, which sends it to a waiting dump truck and which takes it to the asphalt recycling plant. 95% of all old asphalt pavement gets recycled, making it one of the most recycled materials.
Resurfacing is less expensive than full-depth replacement of a paved surface and takes a lot less time. This makes it a great option for those with tight budgets or who need minimal downtime. Life expectancy for resurfaced asphalt is 8-10 years.
If you want to find out if asphalt resurfacing is right for your aged asphalt driveway, road, or parking lot, contact us. We'll be happy to give you a free estimate. We’ll let you know if other types of repairs might be more affordable yet still address your paving needs like pothole patching or crack sealing.

Parking Lot Design
The best parking lot design provides an easily navigated lot where the patrons can quickly find a parking spot and walk in relative safety to their building’s destination. In addition, the design needs to maximize parking spots and strictly comply with all government regulations.
Required Permits:
- To obtain all code permits, you must file a blueprint design that specifies drainage field, type of asphalt mix, gravel layer thickness, emergency access points and number of handicap spaces.
- Parking Lots prematurely fail because of improper Drainage and faults in construction - mostly due to improper grading and incomplete compaction.
- Parking lots are will mostly see passenger traffic. However, most commercial spaces will also have heavy trucks, like box trucks, dumpster service, or delivery trucks that will need pavement with extra support. Those areas can either be paved with a specific grade of asphalt that can hold up to that traffic, or add a concrete pad for those trucks where necessary, to drive on while fulfilling their job.
- Parking lots should have handicap-accessible parking spaces, including parking spaces that are van-accessible with plenty of room for those with limited mobility to get in and out of their vehicle safely. The ADA has specific guidelines for the sizing, signage, and location of these parking spots. We follow all ADA guidelines to ensure your parking lot is compliant and welcoming to customers.
Asphalt Sealcoating
Asphalt is made of a small amount of petroleum-based binder and aggregates (like gravel or stone). This mixture is heated to a somewhat liquid state, and when it cools it binds together into a solid, hard pavement that also has some flex to it. As the asphalt surface ages, it slowly oxidizes (the binder dries out) with exposure to UV Rays, rain, sleet, snow and traffic. This pavement oxidization is obvious as the handsome black color fades to light gray and the aggregate becomes more visible. Sealing asphalt is usually the recommended course of maintenance for aged asphalt surfaces.
Periodic professional application of asphalt sealant periodically will slow oxidation down significantly. The exact makeup of asphalt sealant formulations are often proprietary, but they all shield pavement against UV Rays, high temperatures, rain, ice, snow and wind. Usually we recommend sealing driveways every few years, and parking lots every year or so. This is also dependent on how much traffic the asphalt pavement receives and how harsh the weather has been.

Seal Coating Benefits
- Reflects sunlight
- Repels water
- Blocks grease and oil spills from infiltrating pavement
- Brings back the deep black color so it looks nearly new
- Asphalt life-span is greatly increased
There are many grades of sealants to choose from. This can be confusing for property owners to know what the best option is for their business or home. Our paving contractors have hands-on experience with different sealant formulas and will make sure you get the best quality sealant that is not ineffective, slippery, or washes away.
DIY Sealcoating: Maybe Not so Good
Instead of correctly spreading 2 thin coats, many DIY homeowners think spreading a sealant thickly or even pouring it on a driveway is better protection or saves them time and labor. Think about pouring paint on a flexing surface and you'll understand why the sealer will crack, exposing the driveway the sealer was meant to protect. Plus, it’ll cost more because several more pails of sealant will be used then should be necessary. Unfortunately, your money and labor are wasted on an improper application. NC Paving Pros offers professional sealing services at affordable costs

New Asphalt Driveway Installation
Our paving contractors build driveways that are affordable, of excellent workmanship, long-lasting, and easy to maintain. We have crew leaders checking work often for proper grading, solid subbase of correct depth, asphalt mix of the right consistency of binder versus sand and gravel, correct heat and temperature, and that the compaction is expertly done, ending in a smooth finish.
Asphalt paving is NOT a trade easily taught in the classroom. Instead, it takes years actually doing the hands-on work to become proficient and knowledgeable. For instance, experienced asphalt contractors know how to prepare the site with grading that will direct rain away from the home and off the driveway. Other problems averted by experts are identification of trees/shrubs whose long roots could damage your driveway and noticing improperly mixed asphalt that will quickly crumble into sand and gravel. Any of these faults could ruin your investment, so it's best to prevent them in the first place.
